In short, when he came to the sea, he paused before this sublime, great mass of unknown. Then, he stepped forward and the waters parted that much. He stepped forward again, and the waters parted that much. The story has stayed with me because it speaks to the role of uncertainty in both life and painting. Discovery only happens by taking the first step, and then the next. I am an American artist based in west Wales. Originally from Portland, Maine, I relocated to the UK to pursue an MA in Fine Art Painting at Aberystwyth University, which I completed with distinction in 2023. During this time, I refined my process-driven approach to painting, and developed a distinct language of geometric abstraction, and semi-abstraction. I begin my work by drawing rapid 4 × 4 cm sketches, each drawing feeding into the next. Through repetition, discovery, and intuition, forms gradually emerge and evolve. What begins as a simple shape or structure often leads somewhere unexpected. Working in geometric abstraction and semi-abstraction, I create paintings inspired by landscape, architectural forms, monumental objects, and the play of shifting light. I am interested in the experience of discovery. Through hard edges, flat colour, and carefully considered shapes and forms, I cut away the inessential and create paintings that invite slow looking and evoke a sense of stillness and mystery.
